What is a Moots?

Road. Mountain. Cross. Custom. All Moots titanium frames are hand built, one at a time to precision specs, to deliver a lifetime of outstanding riding regardless of your individual riding style. Looking for the latest race-ready road frame? A single-track swallowing cross country bike? No one offers the variety of high-end titanium frames like Moots.

Moots Craftmanship

Moots has been building high-performance bike frames since 1981. Each is meticulously fashioned out of premium US-made titanium tubing, allowing them to design every bike to the specific needs of the frame style and individual rider. Their purposeful design philosophy, their knowledge of the unique characteristics of titanium, and their relentless focus on craftsmanship come together in the creation of true lifetime bikes—whether your preference is asphalt, dirt or both.

Each tube miter and each weld, in every single frame we build, is done by hand. Checked by hand. Finished by hand. Polished by hand. Only then do you see they apply the Moots head badge. By hand, of course.

Why Ti?

Behold, the magical, mystery material. For two decades, Moots has built their bike frames exclusively out of premium US-made, Moots Pi Tech 3/2.5 titanium tubing. Why? Because no other material allows Moots the ability to finely tune every single frame to achieve the perfect ride quality in every single bike they make. They custom spec a proprietary blend of tube diameters and wall thicknesses for every single frame style and individual size in their line. This ensures that every single frame that leaves the factory delivers the same distinct ride characteristics, whether in the smallest or largest size in the fleet. Each and every tube is cold-worked, stress relieved seamless tubing that meets exacting specs for durability, stiffness, weight, and ultimately, ride experience. When you consider the lifetime you get out of each frame, it adds up to the perfect, magical frame material. The simple fact is: no other frame material can withstand the day-to-day rigors of the ride quite like ti. A Moots titanium frame will not deaden, loosen, crack, or otherwise degrade in its performance or comfort over time like virtually every other bike material on the planet. And it will outlast several generations of carbon fiber or aluminum frames, and always perform like the day you first rolled it out of your local shop. Down the road, Moots can even refinish your well-ridden Moots frame to look like new without compromising any of the materials properties though our Refurb Program.

READY Charity rides are ubiquitous this time of year, drawing big crowds by welcoming everyone from families out for a few miles to best friends pushing it for seven straight days in honor of someone or something they believe in. And that’s the idea: Through entry fees and fund-raising, these events benefit cancer research, children’s hospitals, humane societies, and more. Unlike a race, for which solid fitness and pack-riding skills are a must, bike rides for a cause are pleasantly noncompetitive. For many, signing up is great motivation simply to enjoy time on the bike, both during the event and on conditioning rides leading up to it.

SET Plan to ride with at least one other person. Friends mean training partners, race-day camaraderie and support, and collective fund-raising efforts (a raffle, yard sale, or potluck with a monetary donation). “Riding with a friend helps you overcome fears,” said Richard Fries, development advisor for Audi Best Buddies Challenge. “New riders might worry about getting a flat or how they look in spandex,” he says. A buddy can provide moral support or be a sounding board for concerns. As for which event to pursue, ideally you want to choose a charity that you feel personally connected to. But before you make a decision, consider how the beneficiary spends your donation. Check out charitynavigator.org, which evaluates the financial health of more than 5,500 organizations. For more fund-raising advice, see “Riding for a Cause.”

GO Rides vary in days and distance. Depending on what your goal is, you may need a little extra training. Bicycling Magazine has a basic 10-week plan for 100 miles. Choose an event that allows you sufficient time to raise the necessary funds. Once you make your choice, sign up before hesitation sets in. Worst case: If you bail, your registration fee will still go toward the cause.—Alan Coté

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRAIN) Feb 1, 13:58 MT—The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) unveiled a new transportation bill Tuesday, sending shock waves through bike advocate groups who say that it emphasizes spending on construction of new highways while eliminating dedicated funding for bike and pedestrian infrastructure.

The American Energy & Infrastructure Jobs Act (H.R. 7) authorizes $260 billion in funding over the next five years for highway, transit and highway safety programs.

As drafted, the 847-page bill consolidates or eliminates 70 programs that are “duplicative or don’t serve a federal purpose.” Among the programs that it would cut is the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program and Safe Routes to School.

The Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program provided $25 million grants to four communities for sidewalks, bicycle lanes and pedestrian and bicycle trails with a goal to demonstrate how these networks can increase the rates of biking and walking while decreasing congestion and energy usage.

Safe Routes to School, introduced in the SAFETEA-LU bill—the previous federal bill that authorized transportation spending for 2005-2009, created safe ways for kids to walk and bike to school.

The bill also effectively cuts the federal Transportation Enhancements program, leaving spending on bike and pedestrian facilities completely up to states. And state Departments of Transportation will no longer be required to have a bicycle and pedestrian coordinator on staff to ensure bike and pedestrian access on new construction projects.

One positive note, the bill does maintain the current level of funding for Recreational Trails at $85 million per year through 2016.

Still, Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists, said the proposed bill reverses 20 years of progress made to include cycling and walking in the country’s transportation plan. In a video on the League’s website, he lists the top 10 reasons why it’s unfavorable for cycling and walking.

“We were expecting the funding would be under attack but were surprised at how carefully they want to take bike/ped out of the bill altogether,” Clarke said. “There were sections of the bill that we didn’t know they knew existed. They’ve gone out of their way to attack the bike/ped portions.”

The previous long-term law authorizing federal surface transportation programs expired in September 2009. Since then, Congress has passed eight short-term extensions.

The bill will be marked up by the Transportation and Infrastructure committee Thursday. Advocates are encouraging members of their organizations to contact their representatives to gain their support for an amendment that will be introduced by Reps. Tom Petri (R-WI), Tim Johnson (R-IL), and Dan Lipinski (D-IL).

The amendment restores dedicated funding for Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School in a consolidated Transportation Improvement Program. It also directs states to fund two full-time coordinators to administer the program.

But they will need to gain the backing of other committee members in order to advance the amendment to a committee vote.
